Eyelid Surgery

When excess skin, fat and lax muscles start affecting the appearance of one or both eyes, Dr Chaithan Reddy helps patients restore a more pleasing appearance by performing blepharoplasty at his practices in Sydney’s North Shore, Norwest, Westmead, or Central Coast regions.

To date, Dr Reddy has performed hundreds of blepharoplasty procedures on patients who want to rejuvenate their eye area. During eyelid surgery, just the right amount of fat will be removed so as to not create a hollow effect that will enhance the signs of ageing. Depending on the specific needs of the patient, either the lower or upper eyelids can be addressed, or both.
The duration of the procedure will depend upon whether you are having your upper and or lower eyelids corrected.
Upper eyelid surgery can be readily performed in our clinic and takes approximately 1 hr. Patients can return home the same day, shortly following the procedure. Some patients may choose to have this performed in hospital, but again, may return home the same day.
Typical upper eyelid incisions are positioned in the naturally occurring eyelid crease. This is depicted below. The pattern of skin excision is also shown below.
Once the incisions heal and mature, upper eyelid incisions can be almost imperceptible. Please refer to our image gallery to see my results.
Lower eyelid surgery varies in duration based on what is required to achieve adequate correction. If excess loose skin is the only issue, then a “pinch blepharoplasty” can be performed in our clinic, and again, patients may comfortably return home the same day.
If your lower eyelid surgery requires correction of lower eyelid “eyebags” (prominent fatty bags situated under the eyes), then this is a more involved procedure, entailing surgery in hospital.
Dr Reddy has extensive experience in the correction of lower eyelid bags. This is a relatively tricky operation requiring a good understanding of intricate lower eyelid anatomy. By having a good understanding of the anatomy and cause for lower eyelid bags, one can adequately correct the problem.
Lower eyelid bags typically arise as a result of fat protrusion, rather than loose skin. The lower eyelid differs from the upper eyelid, in that there are three distinct fat compartments that sit within the lower eyelid, and this I depicted in the below image.
These fat compartments are unrelated to body fat and individuals have varying amounts of fat based on genetics. These fat compartments are usually held in place by a thin ligament known as the septum.
In some individuals, this septum can be lax allowing the fat pad(s) to bulge forward. In others, the ligament may be normal, but the fat pad may be relatively large, again leading to the appearance of prominent ‘eyebags’.
To correct lower eyelid bags, an incision is placed just under the lash line (or on the inside of the eyelid in some cases) and the skin and eyelid muscle are elevated so that the fat compartments can be accessed.
The fat may be trimmed, and whilst this is a relatively simple solution, I do not believe this is always the most appropriate approach to achieving long lasting aesthetic results. Whilst this can achieve good results in the short term, it often leads to a ‘hollowed out’ look in the long term; And hollowing around the eyes leads to a prematurely aged look.
My preference is therefore to reposition this prominent fat (using well described techniques) and fill the ‘tear trough’ region to achieve an aesthetically pleasing smooth lower eyelid contour. This has to be done in a very controlled manner so that undue tension is not placed on the lower eyelid. The lower eyelid ligament is also routinely tightened and suspended to ensure adequate support is maintained in the lower eyelid. When done in this manner, excellent results are achieved with not only correction of the eyelid bag(s), but a smooth and youthful lid-cheek junction is achieved.
